BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Dorothy L. “Dottie” Hewson, 73, a resident of Gage Street, died on Friday evening, Feb. 10, 2006, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, following a long illness.

She was born in Bennington on March 28, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Herbert A. Knapp, and the former Alice Blanchard who survives. Dorothy received her education in Bennington schools and is a graduate of Bennington High School. She married Howard J. Hewson at the First Baptist Church in Bennington on July 7, 1951. Mr. Hewson died on April 7, 1995.

Mrs. Hewson was employed in earlier years at Montgomery-Wards in sales, and later was a nurse’s aid at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington for 25 years, from which she retired.

She was a member of the American Legion Post 13 Auxiliary, a longtime member of the Emblem Club and the Bennington Elks Lodge.

Her family always came first in her life.

Besides her mother of Bennington, Dorothy is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Stephanie Hewson of Bennington. She leaves three grandchildren, Heather K. Hewson of Arlington, Va., Gary L. Hewson of Bennington, and Shannon Sweet of Mooresville. She has four sisters, Patricia Houran of Williamstown, Mass., Beverly Rowe of Key Largo, Fla., Kaye Daigneault of Bennington, and Hazel Callanan of Santa Clarita, Calif.; and one brother, Herbert B. Knapp of Bennington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dorothy is predeceased by two sons, Howard A. “Tony” Hewson and Gary L. Hewson, and her infant daughter, Debra Hewson.

Funeral services for Dorothy will be held on Wednesday morning, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington, with the Rabbi Howard Cohen, officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, Feb. 14, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Members of the Bennington Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to offer their respects.
