Obituary Condolences

NORTH BENNINGTON -- A prayer service for Dorothy M. Reilly Mercier was held on Tuesday morning at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian death and burial at St. John the Baptist in North Bennington with the Rev. Edward Howard, pastor, officiating. The Rev. Michael DeMasi concelebrated. Assisting at the Mass was Mr. Ivan Matt.

Upon arriving at the church, the pall was placed over the casket by Mrs. Mercier’s sister, Elinor Hyjek, and her niece, Alicia Hyjek. The wooden cross was placed on the casket by Mrs. Mercier’s daughter, Alison Nicholson. The Scriptures were read by her nephew, Steven Hyjek.

The musical selections for the Mass included “Amazing Grace” for the procession. “Ave Maria” was sung at the offertory. The communion hymns were “Gifts of Finest Wheat” and “Here I Am Lord,” and the recessional hymn was “On Eagles’ Wings.” These were played by Mrs. Louise Gauthier, the church’s organist, and sung by Ms. Monica Murray.

Members of the St. John the Baptist Sodality acted as honor guard and included Theresa DeMasi, Jill Levin, Betty Becker, Mae Fox and Lorna Cole. Pall bearers for the Mass were her brother-in-law Walter Hyjek and her nephew Steven Hyjek; assisting them were staff of the funeral home.

A time of fellowship followed at the parish hall following the Mass.

Mrs. Mercier will be interred in Dellwood Cemetery in the spring.

Mrs. Dorothy M. Reilly Mercier, 77, a resident of the Homestead Mews, died Saturday evening, March 5, 2005, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
