BENNINGTON -- Dorothy H. Mattison, 77, wife of Erwin F. Mattison, a resident of Gore Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Shaftsbury, July 25, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Rupert and Ruth (Harrington) Montgomery. She received her education in the Shaftsbury and Bennington schools and was a 1947 graduate of Bennington High School.

Dorothy and Erwin were married Sept. 20, 1947, at the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church.

In earlier years Dorothy was employed at the former EZ Mills. After leaving EZ Mills Dorothy’s time was spent raising her six children and caring for her family. She enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, sewing, gardening, watching red cardinals in her backyard and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Erwin F. Mattison of Bennington; six children and their spouses, Stephen and Sally Mattison of Aurora, Colo, Gary and Claudia Mattison, Cynthia and Robert Carpenter and Jeffrey and Tami Mattison, all of Shaftsbury, Lisa and Jerry LaCroix of Bennington and Connie and Dean Lawton of Jericho; 21 grandchildren, Amber Hutchins, Holly Mattison, Stephen Mattison, Bonnie Brown, Juliet Forshay and Crystal Bowen, all of Colorado, Rachel Borge of Manchester, N.H., Gwendolyn Mattison of Bennington, Allison Young and Nicholas Young of Shaftsbury, Tammy Carpenter of North Bennington, Timothy Carpenter of Shaftsbury, Amanda Mattison of Shaftsbury, Jeffrey Mattison of Bennington, Joshua Longton of Shaftsbury, Cortland Wade-Bailey and Cody Wade-Bailey, both of Shaftsbury, Jay LaCroix and Whitney LaCroix, both of Bennington, and Jason Lawton and JoBeth Lawton, both of Jericho; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Donald MacMillan of Cartersville, Ga.; a brother-in-law, Glenn Hightower of Cedartown, Ga; an aunt, Thelma VanDale of Bennington; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Dorothy was predeceased by a grandson, Brett Montgomery LaCroix, and a sister, Joyce Hightower.

The funeral will be held from the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Shaftsbury Village Cemetery.
