Dorothy H. Smith 1917-2011 HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. Mrs. Dorothy H. Smith, 93, a resident of the Danforth Home in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. died March 22, 2011 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. Prior to moving to the Danforth Home, Dorothy resided in Cambridge, NY. Dorothy was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on November 2, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Frederick and Loretta (Fagan) Hunter. Dorothy received her education in Troy, N.Y. She married Mr. George Philip Smith on June 6, 1942 in Stratford, Conn. Mr. Smith died September 12, 1996. In earlier years Dorothy was employed as a telephone operator in Troy, NY. Later, along with her husband, she owned and operated dry goods stores in Cornish and Bridgeton, Maine. Dorothy also worked in the Adult Education Program for the Windham Maine School District. She was a member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Cambridge, N.Y. Her family and grandchildren were her main interest. Dorothy was bright, cheerful and possessed a quick wit throughout her life. She enjoyed puzzles with her grand children, tea parties and games of toss. Survivors include her children, Mrs. Sharon Birnbach (and her husband Richard) of Cambridge, N.Y., Mr. Philip Smith (and his wife Linda) of Westford, Ma., and Mr. Kim Smith (and his wife Susan Owen) of Acton, Ma., her niece Mrs. Carol Jean McGarigle of Cornish, Maine, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren. and her three sisters Mrs. Mary Coffey of Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Margaret "Peggy" Miele of Albany, N.Y., and Mrs. Madeline Collins of Hudson, Mass. Dorothy had many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dorothy was pre-deceased by a brother, Mr. Frederick Hunter and a sister, Mrs. Etta Walsh. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church on Monday March 28, 2011 at 2 p.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery in Cornish, Maine at a later date. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Matthew Pender M.D. and to the staff of the Danforth Home for the kindnesses that marked their long relationship with Dorothy. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Dorothy H. Smith may be made to the Hoosick Falls Rescue Squad through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201
