Douglas Mason Wallace

1929-2013 WESTBROOK, ME Douglas Mason Wallace, 84, a resident of Westbrook since 1954 died peacefully July 20, 2013, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. He was a kind and gentle person who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Wallace was born April 8, 1929, in Kew Gardens, Queens, NY, the son of H. James and Evelyn Mason Wallace. In his early years he lived in Utica, NY, and St. Albans, VT, graduating from Bellows Free Academy of St. Albans in 1947 and Williston Academy of Easthampton, MA, in 1949. He graduated from the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse in 1954 and that year joined S.D. Warren Company in Westbrook as a chemical engineer. He retired from S.D. Warren in 1992.

He married Greta L. Warming April 4, 1959. She has always said, "When Doug was born, the mold was broken."

Mr. Wallace was a call member of the St. Albans Fire Department for 3 years and the Westbrook Fire Department for 22 years. He was a member of the Westbrook Planning Board 10 years, serving as Chairman 7 years and Chairman of the Westbrook Conservation and Recreation Commission 5 years. He also was a member of the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Club many years, serving as President in 1988-1989 and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an avid skier beginning in 1938 and was a member of the ski patrol for about 10 years at Pleasant Mountain. He enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing year-round. Since his high school years, he has sung in school glee clubs, church choirs, the Portland Community Chorus and the Lemon Bay Community Chorus Barbershop Quartet. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served in several assignments over the years. For the last 18 glorious years, he and his wife Greta have met so many wonderful people at their winter residence in Englewood, FL. Mr. Wallace especially enjoyed watching the sunrises from his deck overlooking Lemon Bay.

He is survived by Greta, the love of his life and his wife of 54 years, sons Douglas M. Wallace, Jr. and wife Melanie of Denver, CO; Stephen W. Wallace of Carolina Beach, NC; David T. Wallace and wife Debra of Cumberland, ME; and granddaughters Amanda G. Wallace and Oceanna P. Golliday. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. H. James Wallace of Rutland, VT, a sister, Mrs. Anthony Domenico of Washington, DC, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Greta expresses her gratitude to all of the doctors, nurses and staff of Maine Medical Center that took such excellent care of her husband while he was there.

Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 612 Main Street, Westbrook, on Friday, July 26 at 11:00am. Burial followed at Woodlawn Cemetery, Westbrook.
