MANCHESTER -- Dudley P. Griffis Jr., 71, a resident of Cass Terrace in Manchester, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

He was born on March 4, 1934, the son of Dudley P. and Mary (Burns) Griffis Sr., and attended local schools, graduating from Arlington High School with the class of 1952.

Dudley was a lifelong mason, working for some area contractors, but was mainly self-employed throughout his career. He married the former Marie Kent in Manchester on Oct. 16, 1954. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past October.

Dudley loved hunting, fishing, bowling and especially golf. He loved to feed and watch wild birds. He was an avid crossword puzzle fan and enjoyed playing cards with his friends. Dudley coached Little League baseball for several years and played on the Manchester softball team. Dudley was a Manchester volunteer firefighter for many years, a member of the Harned-Fowler Post 6471 VFW as a social member, the VFW dart club and the Dorset Sportmans Club, where he helped build their facility. His biggest love was watching his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Marie of Manchester; one son, Dudley P. “Butch” Griffis III; three daughters, Kathy Griffis of Burlington, Leslie Beck of Waterbury and Mary J. Griffis of Salem, N.Y.; three brothers, Arnold Griffis of Milton, Thomas Griffis of Pensacola, Fla. and George Griffis of Arlington; his sister, Colleen Hastings of Arlington; and his grandchildren, Melody Pagliuca and Carly Pagliuca of Burlington, Savanna Cary of Salem and Connor and Eli Beck of Waterbury; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother William Griffis. A celebration of Dudley’s life will be held Saturday, April 30, at 2 p.m. at Brewster Funeral Service, Manchester Center. There are no visiting hours.
