WILMINGTON -- Dulcena Jacobs, 92, formerly of Wilmington and North Branch Street in Bennington, died Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 12, 2006, at Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington.

She was born in Brattleboro on Aug. 8, 1914, the daughter of Ralph and Charlotte Hall Smith. Dulcena was educated in Wilmington schools, graduating from Wilmington High School, class of 1933. She continued her education at the University of Vermont where she earned her bachelor of science degree with a concentration in education in 1937.

Dulcena taught elementary education in Wilmington, West Dover and Searsburg from 1937-1945. She continued her teaching career in the Petersburgh, N.Y. school system as principal until 1960, retiring from the Cambridge, N.Y., school system in 1961. Dulcena then worked for the Holstein Friesian Co. in Brattleboro for three years before moving to Petersburgh, where she worked in the First Presbyterian Church, now known as the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, for three years, then worked for the Rensselaer City Department of Social Services, retiring as supervisor on Aug. 31, 1980, after 17 years of service.

Dulcena also was the former secretary for the Petersburgh Senior Citizens and the Petersburgh Library, was secretary-treasurer for the Board of Fire Commissioners, and helped organize the Petersburgh Ambulance and Rescue Squad.

Dulcena was a former member of the First Congregational Church in Wilmington, the National Education Association, New York and Vermont State Teacher Associations, Association of Department of Human Resources, and former member of the Petersburgh Methodist Church.

Dulcena is survived by her son, Nelson Keith Jacobs, and his wife, Carmen, of Prospect, Conn., and six grandchildren, Shelly Canfield, Rebecca and Keith Jacobs and Darcy Bardwell, Traci and Corey Jacobs, and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Paige Brazee. She was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Ralph Jacobs, and her sister, Maxine Lackey.

Funeral services for Dulcena will be held Friday, Dec. 15, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Wilmington. Interment will be in the spring in the family lot in Riverview Cemetery.
