Durward R. DeForest 1923-2012 MANCHESTER, VT Durward R. DeForest, formerly of Van Cortland Street in Schenectady, N.Y., and a resident of Manchester, Vt., passed away Monday, January 16, 2012 at Equinox Terrace in Manchester. Durward was born in Schenectady, N.Y., on August 3, 1923, the son of Stanley E. and Lovisa (Rogers) DeForest. He was educated in Schenectady schools, graduated from Nott Terrace High School and received his Bachelor's degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). Durward was a World War II veteran, serving in Europe as a member of the United States Army. He worked as a metallurgical engineer for General Electric in Schenectady for many years and was also a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials and was very active writing papers about his work. He loved playing golf and enjoyed camping, traveling, cross country skiing and all outdoor activities. He enjoyed square dancing with his wife, Margaret and volunteered preparing taxes for the elderly. He was a very active member and greeter at Zion Lutheran Church in Schenectady. In his earlier years, he was very involved with his sons in the Boy Scouts and youth sports. He loved his home and cherished time spent with his family. Durward is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Smith of Schenectady, N.Y., and Manchester, Vt., whom he married at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Schenectady on October 5, 1946. He is also survived by his sons, Russell DeForest and his wife, Judy of Brecksville, Ohio; Daniel DeForest and his wife, Holly of Manchester, Vt.; and David DeForest and his wife, Karen of North Attleboro, Mass.; his brother, Ronald DeForest of Scotia; his sister, Eleanor Orkis of Schenectady; his grandchildren: Jack, Russell, Seth, Kelly, Sarah, Benjamin, and Lucas, and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Stanley DeForest. FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial services for Durward will be held Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 153 Nott Terrace, Schenectady, New York. Rev. Shawn Dugan will officiate. Interment will be private. There are no visiting hours. If friends desire, memorial gifts in Durward's memory may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 153 Nott Terrace, Schenectady, NY 12308.
