AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- Earl J. Harris, 83, of Bulls Head Road, passed away Wednesday evening, Dec. 14, 2005, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

He was born on July 16, 1922 in South Shaftsbury, Vt., the son of the late John and Edna Baker Harris. He was educated in North Bennington, Vt., schools.

During World War II, Mr. Harris served in the Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, specifically Okinawa.

Mr. Harris worked for the railroad for several years in Vermont. Later, he worked at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady, in the large steam-turbine department, before retiring.

Mr. Harris enjoyed bluegrass music immensely and was a founding member of the Old Time Blue Grass Association.

He was a Catholic.

Mr. Harris was married to Selma Saad Harris on July 22, 1942. She died Sept. 5, 2000.

Survivors include six children: Linda Harris of Shaftsbury, Gary Harris and wife Joan of Cohoes, Sally Milonovich and husband Michael of Amsterdam, Christine Wright and husband Gerald of Amsterdam, Jennifer Patterson and husband Larry of Delanson, Earlene Laven and husband Carl, of Delanson; a sister, Jeanette Jakubiak of Schenectady; five grandchildren, Sara, Aaron, Bryan, Marcy and Brandon; two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service and burial will be held at the Chuctanunda Cemetery in Minaville in the spring. There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the town of Florida Fire Department or to the Greater Amsterdam Ambulance Corp.
