Earlene Fellows Obituary
Earlene Dorothy Fellows

1924-2013 Earlene Dorothy Fellows, 88, a former resident of Sunderland, died May 30, 2013 in Bennington. The daughter of Myrtle Fellows, was born in her grandparent's farmhouse in West Danville, VT on November 18, 1924 with her grandmother Alice (Maude) Fellows acting as midwife. Earlene remained at the farm and was raised by her grandparents. She became a very important part of a very large family as her grandparents had a total of 14 children. One of her aunts was younger than her by two years. She was always there when needed by her Fellows aunts and uncles. Earlene displayed independence from the beginning. She was confident, courageous and created her own path in life, daring to go places and do things which would test her own merits and require her to rely on her own resources. She attended high school while working after school until midnight to provide for her support. During wartime she lived with an aunt in Massachusetts and was employed in the nearby shipyards as a true "Rosie the Riveter" on battleships. At war's end among the many jobs she undertook, she became primarily a waitress in New York City and did a bit of modeling. New York City allowed Earlene to satisfy her quest to find fun and adventures in all she did. She was always ready for anything fun, laughed often and enjoyed her life. She went to Broadway shows and listened to famous bands and soloists at glittering ballrooms, such as the Mermaid Room, Tavern on the Green and many others. In 1960 she returned to Vermont, constructed the Candlelight Motel in Arlington, VT and was its' 24 hour owner/proprietor, utilized her waitressing experience, cooking and serving a hot breakfast for guests and cleaned many a room. By 1974 she had sold the motel and now faced a new challenge completing an extensive renovation of the Inn Towne Motel in Ludlow, VT. That achieved, she sold the Inn Towne, and built her dream home, a chalet in Sunderland. She studied for and obtained her real estate license, worked for a firm for a time and then started her own real estate business which she continued to operate into her 80's. This incredible woman was pre-deceased by her brother Francis Jones. Surviving her are Francis' wife Betty and their children, Danny, Mark, Darlene and Gary. She also leaves her many cousins and her special god daughter, Shanna Jones Many thanks are extended to all those who participated in her end of life care, gave their best and became her dear friends, everyone at Rivers Edge Community Care, the Visiting Nurses, Hospice, Rev. Joel Tibbetts and her special friend and fellow resident at Rivers Edge "Ruth" Earlene will be interred at the Fellows lot at Park Lawn Cemetery next to her beloved grandmother and among many of her aunts. Committal services will be held on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. Guest book condolences may be made at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net
