BENNINGTON -- Edeltraut “Edel” Cassano, 78, a resident of Coleville Road in Bennington, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 at her residence, following several years of declining health.

She was born in Hamburg, Altona, Germany, April 17, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Gunther and Elizabeth (Kistner) Haverkamp. She received her education in Germany and was very proud to have attended adult education classes at Mount Anthony Union High School.

During World War II, Edel was conscripted into the German Air Force.

She married Sylvio Cassano, March 13, 1948 in Germany. Mr. Cassano died Sept. 8, 1982.

In earlier years, Edel was employed at the Bennington Brush Company and for several years had been employed by Dr. and Mrs. Julius Manes. Edel enjoyed cooking, baking, she loved sweets, sewing and crocheting.

She also enjoyed classical music, musicals and was a big fan of Tom Jones. In earlier years Edel enjoyed kayaking, window shopping and having coffee at Geannelis’s Restaurant. She liked to travel and traveled many times to her home country of Germany. Her secret ambition was to be a ballet dancer. Since 1984, Edel had been a member of Bennington Project Independence.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Rene and Lynne Cassano of Bennington, Curtis and Lisa Cassano of Cambridge, N.Y.; three grandchildren; one sister, Almut Gautney of Florence, Ala.; and a brother, Harald Haverkamp of Kassel, Germany. Several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home Monday Oct. 13, 2003 at 10 a.m. with a prayer, and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 10:30 a.m. where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be offered Sunday at 5 p.m.
