EDMA A. RILEY 1926 - 2009 SHAFTSBURY, VT Mr. Edma A. "Brud" Riley, 83, a resident of Mountain View Drive, died Friday, July 17, 2009 at home following a long illness. Brud was born in Rensselaer, N.Y., May 15, 1926. He was the son of Austin E. Riley and Irene Domery. Brud received his education at Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, N.Y. He served honorably in the Marine Corp in World War II in the Pacific Theatre of operations obtaining the rank of Corporal. Returning home after the war in 1946, Brud met and married the love of his life, Betty Dailey, started their large family and joined his father in his business at the Washington Ave. Garage, which Brud then successfully owned and operated until 1966. At that time Brud assumed the position of Director of Operations at William E. Dailey Inc. in Shaftsbury, VT. Following his retirement from Dailey's in 1983 Brud, an industrious man by nature, along with Betty, founded B&B Builders which both of them successfully owned and operated for the next 15 years. They built homes in Southern Vermont and Western New York State. Brud's tireless energy was not only limited to his work and home environments; he undertook and participated in many social and civic endeavors. Brud was a life member of the Norshaft Lions Club serving in many capacities including King Lion. He was President of AGC (Associated General Contractors) of Vermont during his tenure at Dailey's. Concerned about the safety of seniors on graduation night at North Bennington High school he initiated a Senior All Night Party, which he organized, directed, and performed in for 16 consecutive years at NBHS and then Mount Anthony Union High School. Brud along with his wife Betty also directed and performed in numerous variety shows in Vermont, Florida, Nevada, Louisiana, and the Islands through their involvement with the Ms. Senior America program. Brud was a devoted husband and father who always put his family first. Brud was predeceased by his sister, Claire Riley Hilligas and his brother, Austin Riley. He leaves his loving and devoted wife Betty Dailey Riley. Brud leaves his 10 children to cherish his memory; Lynda Riley Thomas (Dr. Gordon Thomas), Dr. Barbara Riley Ripa (Jim Ripa), Betty Riley Borsa (Howard Borsa), Dail Riley, Pat Riley, Kathy Riley Kenyon (John Kenyon), Edward Austin Riley, Millie Riley Butler (Mark Butler), Diane Riley Clark (Doug Clark) and Karen Riley McElwain (Dave McElwain). Brud also leaves 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE: The family will receive friends who wish to celebrate Brud's life on Monday July 20th from 4 to 6 p.m. at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME 628 Main St. Bennington, VT.
