Obituary Condolences

NORTH BENNINGTON -- Edward A. Rice, 83, a resident of Main Street, died Wednesday Sept. 19, 2007, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

He was born in Waterbury, Conn. on March 20, 1924, the son of Lynn Edward and Elsie (Bizbee) Rice. Edward attended Green Mountain Junior College and graduated from Goddard College in Plainfield with his bachelor’s degree. He continued his education at the University of Vermont graduate school and University of Massachusetts graduate school.

He was a health inspector for the state of Vermont for many years. In later years, Edward became a full-time artist, known for his slate engraving. Edward was a Navy medic, serving time in Guam, China and the South Pacific during World War II. Edward thoroughly enjoyed the medical system that the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington had to offer.

He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed spending time at Lake Paran and was an avid reader. Edward was very athletic. He was a great skater and played and coached hockey. He loved football: small in stature to play, he always wanted to coach the game.

He is survived by his wife, the former Muriel Galusha of North Bennington; his children by his first marriage, son Philip Rice of Langueiel, Canada, and two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Beebe of St. Jo, Texas, and Nancy Rice of Middlebury; and his sister Elizabeth Peace of Leland, Michigan, and Fernadino Beach, Fla. His first wife, Dorothea Post Rice, predeceased him.

At the request of the family there will be no formal funeral services. A time to celebrate Ed’s life will be held Oct. 13 at Lake Paran. There will be a similar service in Mattituck, Long Island, next summer. If friends desire, memorial gifts in Edward’s memory may be made to Paran Recreation Inc. in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
