Edward C. Armstrong

1924-2012 SHAFTSBURY Edward C. Armstrong, 87, a resident of Route 67 East, Shaftsbury, VT died Saturday October 20, 2012 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington December 9, 1924, he was the son of the late Edward Keith and Effie (Greer) Armstrong. He received his education in the Bennington schools.

Ed was a World War II Army veteran. He served in the Pacific with the Americal Division on the island of Bogaville and also in the Philippines where he was wounded and received both the Purple Heart and a Silver Star.

Ed married the former Lina Greene at the Shaftsbury Methodist Church on September 2, 1950.

In earlier years Ed was employed at the former Paquin's Market on North Street. He later worked at General Cable Company in Pownal for 28 years prior to his retirement.

Ed was a member of the Bennington Club, Elks Lodge 567, Moose Lodge 1233, VFW Post 1332, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 4, and American Legion Post 69 in Arlington. In earlier years Ed had also been active as a member of the Shaftsbury Fire Department and as a coach in the NorShaft Little League.

He enjoyed time spent at his camp in Bacon Hollow and riding with his motorcycle club.

Survivors include his wife, Lina Armstrong and son, Alan E. Armstrong, both of Shaftsbury; a sister, Marion Stark of Searsburg; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Ed was predeceased by a sister and brother, Ethel Paquin and Raymond Armstrong.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday October 24, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. with Kenneth Coonradt Chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home officiating

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday October 23, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m when the family will be in attendance.

Should friends desire contributions in Edward C. Armstrong's memory may be made to either Disabled American Veterans Chapter 4, American Legion Post 69 or the Vermont Heart Association through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
