NAPLES, Fla. -- Edward Henry Cumpston IV, 86, died Aug. 29, 2007, at Bentley Village in Naples. He was born June 14, 1921, in Rochester, N.Y., son of Dorothy Copenhaver Cumpston and Edward Henry Cumpston III. His sister, Julia Ramsay Lawless, lives in Rochester, N.Y. He lived in Old Bennington, Vt., for many years before moving the Naples.

He attended Harley School, Cornell University and received a bachelors in engineering from MIT in 1946. He served in the U.S. Fifth Army in Europe in World War II.

He married Catherine Hume Maguire Aug. 4, 1944, in Cambridge, Mass. He worked as an inventor, and acquired numerous patents, mostly in the paper pulp refining industry. As a teenager he designed the first ubiquitous golf bag caddy. Early in his career, working for Kodak in Rochester, he invented the film advance mechanism for the first point and shoot Kodak instamatic camera.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine of Naples; three children, Mary Hume Cumpston, Edward Henry Cumpston V and Copenhaver Cumpston; and six grandchildren, five in Israel and one in Illinois.

A memorial service will be held in Cambridge, MA in the spring.
