Edward W. Devlin

1947 - 2014 NORTH BENNINGTON Edward W. Devlin, 66, a resident of White Creek Road, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, following a long illness. He was born in Bennington on Nov. 18, 1947, son of the late Patrick and Doris (McDermott) Devlin. Ed received his education in Bennington. He served in the Army. For 35 years Ed was employed at Vermont Container in Bennington, retiring in 2005. He was a member of the American Legion Post 13 and a former member of the Hoosick Falls Eagles Club. He enjoyed working on cars and going to the races. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. His grandchildren were the love of his life. Ed married the former Catherine Church on Nov. 10, 1973, in Pittstown, N.Y. Mrs. Devlin died Dec. 27, 2007. Survivors include his children, Cindy Tifft (Marcus) of North Bennington, and Terry Putnam (Dean Catellier) of Cambridge, N.Y.; his stepchildren, Robert Hurley (Tracy) of Pownal, Judy Alpers of Texas, Edward Hurley and Patrick Hurley, both of Hanover, Pa., several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur Devlin (Linda) of Woodford, and Dennis Devlin of Shaftsbury; a sister, Bonnie Dumas (Rob) of West Rutland, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a step daughter, Rebecca Hurley. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday, July 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. The funeral will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at 10 a.m. Burial will take place in the family lot at the Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Edward W. Devlin may be made to the Renal Dialysis Unit at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
