Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- A prayer service was offered for Edward Haddad on Monday morning at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington and was followed by a Mass of Resurrection at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington, with the Rev. Vincent Coppola, csc associate pastor, officiating. Bennington Rural Fire Engine 44 was used to move the casket to the church and then to the cemetery.

Assisting at the mass were Mr. Leonard Anzivino, Mr. Ed Malloy, Dr. Barth Vander Els and Mr. Joseph Anton.

Organist for the mass was Mr. Donald McMahon, and the hymns included “Amazing Grace,” “On Eagle’s Wings” and “Here I Am Lord” and were sung by Ms. Monica Murray.

”Ave Maria” was sung by family friend Mrs. Marti Sargent. Pete Taylor sang the song “Tribute.”

The pall was placed on the casket by three of his grandchildren, David, Sarah and Rachael Ordille. The Cross of Resurrection was placed on the casket by his widow, Mrs. Dorothy Haddad. The Old Testament was read by Mr. Haddad’s nephew, R.J. Harris and the New Testament was read by nephew Tim Harris.

The Eucharistic gifts were brought to the altar by his grandchildren Jason, Heather and Jeff Thomayer.

Mr. David Ordille, Mr. Haddad’s son-in-law, read the “Fireman’s Prayer,” and his daughter, Mrs. Mary Harris, offered the eulogy.

Pallbearers for the services included members of the Bennington Rural Fire Department: Mr. Kevin Goodhue, Mr. Tim Burgess, Mr. John Behan, Chief Joe Hayes, Mr. Mike Rupprecht and Mr. Sam Kelson.

Following the mass, the procession drove to the north side of town and stopped at the Willow Road Fire House where Mr. Haddad’s last call was rung. The long procession of family and fire equipment then proceeded to Park Lawn Cemetery where the Village Fire Department had extended the ladder from the ladder truck over the driveway with a large American flag waving.

Interment took place in the family lot where the flag folding and presentation were done by Mr. Ralph Brown and Mr. Joseph Krawczyk, of the Bennington American Legion Post 13. Taps were played by Mr. Maurice Rancourt.

Attending the visitation on Sunday at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home were members of the Knights of Columbus and their Chaplain, the Rev. Michael DeMasi, who led the group in reciting the rosary.

Also in attendance were members of several fire department throughout the state including Bennington Rural Fire Department, Bennington Fire Department, North Bennington Fire Department, Shaftsbury Fire Department, Pownal Fire Department, the Pownal Valley Fire Company, Arlington Fire Department, Manchester Fire Department, Rutland City Fire Department, Vergennes Fire Company, Addison Fire Department, Orwell Fire Department, members of the Vermont State Firefighters Association, and members of the Bennington Rescue Squad.

Mr. Edward A. Haddad, 84, a longtime resident of Northside Drive, and longtime local contractor and a 54 year member of the Bennington Rural Fire Department, died on Wednesday, July 18, 2007, peacefully at his home surrounded by family.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
