Edward J. Caron 1924 - 2009 BENNINGTON Edward J. Caron, 84, a resident of Pageant St. Bennington, Vt., died Sunday Feb. 1, 2009, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, following a brief illness. He was born in Bennington, Vt., Dec. 7, 1924. He was the son of Albert and Lila Betit Caron. Ed received his education in Bennington. During World War II Ed served with the 4th Division of the 8th Infantry. He served in the first wave of assault on Utah Beach in Normandy. For his service Ed was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He married the former Ella May Harrington on Aug. 25, 1945 at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Mr. Caron was first employed by his father at Caron's Plumbing and Heating. He later worked for twenty years at the Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, New York as a steam fitter from which he retired. At the age of 65 Ed took up the game of golf and became a very good player. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to casinos. He was a big Notre Dame fan and his pride and joy was his dog "Willy". Ed was a member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks # 567, the American Legion Post 13 and the Disabled American Veterans. He leaves his wife, Ella May Caron of Bennington. His children and their spouses, Sally McCoubrey and Michael of Erial, New Jersey, Tom Caron and Gail of Bennington, Linda Maynard and Fran of Bennington, Dan Caron and Peggy of White Creek, New York, Doug Caron and Jo-ann of Shaftsbury, Mollie McMahon and Dan of Petersburg, N.Y., and Tammy Caron and Brian Pinger of Shushan, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren, three sisters Marion Goodhue of the Villages, Florida, Amelia Gallant of White Creek, N.Y., and Katie Watts of Red Bank, N.J. Many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a brother and sister Albert Caron and Vivian Knapp. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Friday Feb. 6, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered. The burial with military honors will take place in the family lot at the Gerald B. Soloman Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, New York on Friday at 2:30 pm. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday February 5, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. If friends desire contributions in memory of Mr. Caron may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201. The following organizations are requested to meet at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home Thursday evening to conduct their services. Bennington Elks Lodge at 7 p.m., American Legion Post 13 at 7:30 p.m.
