Edward William Smith 1940 - 2011 BENNINGTON Edward William Smith, 71, of Robinson Avenue died Saturday, July 30, 2011, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. He was born in Beverly, Mass., on May 24, 1940, the son of the late Everett W. and Gladys L. McCarthy Smith. He received his early education in Pownal, Vt., and was a graduate of Hoosick Falls High School in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. Edward later attended the University of Vermont and Community College of Vermont. In earlier years, Mr. Smith was employed as a general supervisor at Pownal Tanning in Pownal and as production supervisor at Johnson Controls. He last worked as a molding operator at Mack Molding in Arlington. He was a former member of the Bennington Elks Lodge #567 and the Catamount Bow Hunters. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed fishing and he also enjoyed woodworking, reading, oil painting, and in previous years playing golf.He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Smith married the former Rosalie A. Hunt on Feb. 24, 1962, at the First Baptist Church in Bennington. Survivors include his wife, Rosalie A. Smith of Bennington; a daughter, Karen J. Rush of Huntington, Conn.; a son and daughter-in-law, David E. and Bonnie Smith of Pawlet, and six grandchildren, Carrie Anne, Benjamin, Nathaniel, Collin J., Brendan and Anastasia. Edward has two sisters and brothers-in-law, Susan and Andy Nutting of Shaftsbury, and Barbara E. and Marty Notte of Rutland; his wife's sisters, Dawn Farrar and her husband, Frank, of Ballston Spa, N.Y., and Joan Myers of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 10 a.m. at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington. Interment will follow in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, Aug. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorials for Edward may be made to the through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home.
