POWNAL -- Edward Thomas Belville, 74, better known as “Shorty,” died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 following a brief illness, at the home of his daughter, Deborah Burdick, in Pownal. Mr. Belville was born in North Adams, Mass. on June 22, 1929, he was the son of the late George Thomas Belville and Mabel Ethel (Crawford) Belville who survives.

He grew up in Pownal where he attended the Oak Hill School. On May 4, 1956 he was married to Beverly Alderman in Berlin, N.Y. In earlier years, Mr. Belville helped his father on the family farm, throughout his life he had worked in the woods as a logger, mainly for Ted Browe.

For a time, he had also worked at the former Pownal Tannery. In his younger years, he loved to ride his Harley Davidson motorcycle, for a time, when he was in the Midwest he rode a motorcycle in a caged drum at carnival events, he was known for being fearless with a motorcycle. As he grew older, he appreciated the simpler things such as talking with friends, showing off his family album to visitors in his home, picking dandelions, taking a walk and cutting wood. He has also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved the company of his grandchildren and had nicknames for all of them , he also had special numbered names for his children.

In addition to his mother of Ashboro, N.C. he leaves his wife of 47 years Beverly Belville of North Pownal; four sons, Timothy Belville and his wife Donna of Bennington, Terry Belville of Pownal, Rodney Belville and his wife Kelly of Shaftsbury, Michael Belville and his wife Susan of Pownal; four daughters, Deborah Burdick of Pownal, Brenda Belville of Pownal, Cheri Osgood and her husband Allan of North Pownal, Bonnie Bentley and her husband Norman Jr. of North Pownal; a brother, Jerry Belville of Ashboro; a sister, Sharon Sweet and her husband Clifford of Pownal; 22 grandchidren; five great-grandchildren; his good friends, Wayne Baker of North Pownal and Nancy Stevens of Bennington. He was predeceased by a son, Lee Belville in 1993 and two brothers, Lawrence and George Belville.

The funeral service will be held on Monday Jan. 5, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Belville family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. when the family will be present.
