Edward Van Zandt Lane 1911 - 2009 BENNINGTON Edward Van Zandt Lane, age 97, died on August 15, 2009. Mr. Lane was born in South Orange, N.J., on Sept. 25, 1911, son of William H. and Josephine Lane. He was educated in Connecticut schools and graduated from Nichols College in 1933. He served as a navigator for the Air Force during World War II. At the age of 23, he boarded the square-rigged sailing ship Joseph Conrad, while she was anchored in New York Harbor. Ed served under Captain Alan Villiers for thirteen months on an adventure that took him from New York to Auckland, New Zealand. In his later years, he made numerous visits to Mystic Seaport, Conn., to visit the Joseph Conrad where she still serves as a training vessel. Mr. Lane had his own sales and marketing company located in Cheshire, Conn., and for a short time, a branch office in Tequesta, Fla. He retired in 1988. Since 1986, he had been a resident of Palm City and Parkland, Fla. Mr. Lane leaves a daughter, Louise Nichols of Underhill, Vt., son, Peter Van Zandt Lane of Weston, Fla., step-daughter, Holly Smith of Vero Beach, Fla., and four grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Alfred A. Lane of Palm City, Fla. His wife, Barbara Chase Lane predeceased him in 1979. FUNERAL NOTICE: A private burial service will be held at the Bennington Centre Cemetery in Old Bennington, Vermont.
