Obituary Condolences

BENNINGT0N -- Edward William Stankey, 80, a resident of Westwood Drive in Bennington, died on Saturday evening, September 10, 2005, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, following a long illness.

He was born, in Yonkers, N.Y., on Dec. 7, 1924, and was the son of the late Max and Margaret (Brown) Stankey. He received his education in Yonkers. Edward served in the Navy during World War II and was a seaman first class at the time of his discharge. On June 2, 1956, he married the former Eileen Coyne in Yonkers. Mrs. Stankey survives.

At the time of his retirement, Mr. Stankey was a director of safety in the trucking industry. The Stankeys moved to Bennington 11 years ago from New City, N.Y. Edward was a communicant of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington and a member of the American Legion Post No. 13 of Bennington. He had previously resided in Valparaiso, Ind. He was a bird watcher and an avid New York Yankees fan.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, William Stankey of Monroe, Conn., and Brian Stankey of Pomona, N.Y.; and one daughter, Dianne Peles of Bennington; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Stankey of Carmel, Ind.; and one sister, Margaret Cowley of Detroit, Mich. Mr. Stankey is predeceased by one brother, Robert.

A Mass of Christian death and burial will be celebrated in Hawthorne, N.Y., and burial will take place in the family lot in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne. There are no calling hours scheduled.

Memorials in his honor may be made to the Intensive Care Unit at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington through the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
