Edwin Harrison Torrey 1921-2011 Edwin Harrison Torrey, 90, a former resident of Williamstown, Mass., and for many years a resident of Jennings Drive in Bennington died Saturday December 3, 2011 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a long illness. He was born at the family home on Cole Ave. in Williamstown, Mass., October 2, 1921. He was the son of the late Chauncey and Maude G. (Harrison) Torrey. He received his education in Williamstown. At the age of 16 he joined Company K of the National Guard and on January 23, 1942 he joined the United States Navy serving during World War II. Following his military service, Ed started his career as a truck driver and was a member of the Teamsters # 294 in Albany, New York. For twenty one years he drove for Associated Transport and for thirteen years for JJ Newbury from which he retired. Ed was first married to the former Margaret Babcock who died in 1977. He later married the former Pauline Lemieux on February 17, 1978 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bennington. Mrs. Torrey died July 22, 2006 He was a member of the American Legion Post 152 in Williamstown, the VFW Post 1332 in Bennington and was a Life Member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks #567. Ed enjoyed traveling in his motor home and had traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. Survivors include his step children, Donald Rowe and his wife Edith of Woodstock, Vt., Richard Rowe of Cambridge, N.Y., Kathleen Davey of Bennington and James Rowe and Deborah Brillion of Eagle Bridge, N.Y.; Several grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a step son Douglas Rowe, two brothers Richard and Norman Torrey and a sister Jane Sharkey. FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside service with military honors will be held at the family lot at the West Lawn Cemetery in Williamstown, MA on Wednesday December 7, 2011 at 1 p.m. If friends desire contributions in memory of Edwin H. Torrey may be made to the Second Chance Animal Shelter through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201
