Obituary Condolences

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Elaine Lindo Halle died on Aug. 15, 2007, in Ft. Lauderdale, she was 86 years old. Elaine was the great-granddaughter of Joshua Lindo, a New York banker who reportedly helped to finance the Panamanian revolution and facilitated communication between the Panamanians and the U.S. government. The revolution led to the separation of Panama from Columbia and to the signing of the Panama Canal Treaty in 1903, and thereafter to the construction of the Canal.

Elaine was born in New York City in 1921, and moved to Panama with her family where her father Albert Lindo had property and business interests.

She was educated at the Northfield School for Girls (now Northfield Mt. Hermon), in Northfield, Mass., and attended Skidmore and Barnard colleges.

Elaine was introduced to the beauty of southern Vermont by her aunt, Vida Lindo Guiterman, a calligrapher and artist, and her husband Arthur Guiterman, a popular poet of the time, who co-founded the Poetry Society of America. Vida and Arthur were first introduced to Arlington by Dorothy Canfield Fisher.

Elaine spent many summers at Hillhouse, the Guiterman’s summer residence located on Route 7A in Arlington, which was built by the Canfield family.

She married Edward Halle, a New York patent lawyer, who was a president of the New York Patent Law Society, and had two sons. Elaine spent many summers at Hillhouse first as a guest of her aunt and uncle, and then as an owner after her aunt died and left Hillhouse to her niece and nephews. One of Elaine’s girlhood friends from Northfield, Constance Guida, is an Arlington resident.

Elaine’s husband, Edward, died in 2000. She is survived by her son, Peter and his wife, Carolyn Lamm, of Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Vt., and her son Jason of Wilton Manors, and his partner Robert Schneider. She is also survived by two grandchildren.

There will be a memorial gathering for Elaine Halle at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Hillhouse, 3986 Route 7A, Arlington, with refreshments to follow. Friends are invited.
