Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Eleanor C. Harvey, 98, a longtime resident of Gage Street, and for the last 11 years a resident of South Hadley, Mass., where she resided with her daughter Rosemary, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at the Holyoke (Mass.) Medical Center.

She was born in Bennington, on Dec. 12, 1907. She was the daughter of the late John J. and Frances (Bowen) Carrigan. She received her early education in Bennington and was a graduate of Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Rutland where she studied piano and was an accomplished pianist. Mrs. Harvey later attended the College of Saint Rose and was a graduate of Saint Joseph Business College.

She married Earl C. Harvey on Aug. 21, 1937. Mr. Harvey died Dec. 15, 1981.

In earlier years, Eleanor was employed by Twin State and the First National Bank both in Bennington. She later worked as a secretary at both the Home Health Agency and United Counseling Service.

She was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters Court of Saint Andrew and was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church. Her home and her family were her main interests. She also enjoyed a weekly game of Bridge with her friends and rug hooking at the Senior Citizen Center where she made many colorful chair seat covers for her family. Eleanor also loved to knit and sew, and had always made her daughter Eleanor’s dancing and baton twirling costumes. She was interested in fashion and always tried to look her best.

Survivors include two sons, John J. Harvey and his wife, Nancy, of Monmouth Beach, N.J., and Thomas E. Harvey of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, Rosemary E. Harvey of South Hadley, Mass., and Eleanor H. Barnes and her husband, Edward, of Clifton, Va.; four grandchildren, Katherine K. Harvey of Raleigh, N.C., and Carolyn C. Harvey of New York, N.Y., Leslie C. Barnes of Fairfax, Va., and Edward K. Barnes of Clifton, Va.; a nephew Christopher J.C. Trower, of Morrinsville, New Zealand; a great-nephew Callum Trower and a great-niece Charlotte Trower, both of Morrinsville. She was pre-deceased by a brother, John F. Carrigan who was killed in the Philippines during World War II.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 12 p.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., when the family will be in attendance.
