Obituary Condolences

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Eleanor Gertrude Hitchcock Malmgren, 92, formerly of 14 Francis Ave., died Sunday at Mount Greylock Extended Care facility in Pittsfield, where she had resided since April.

Born on Jan. 16, 1914 in East Dorset, Vt., she was a daughter of the late Henry G. and Bessie Brophy Stone. She attended schools in Vermont and was a 1931 graduate of Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester, Vt.

Mrs. Malmgren had been employed by Harry Sykes, C.P.A., of Berkshire Life as a secretary and by Genzabella Realty.

In retirement she was an area Avon representative. She was a youth group leader for the Girl Scouts and the Episcopal Church. Affectionately known as “Ma” by her children and “Nana” by her grandchildren, everyone enjoyed her pies at family gatherings.

She was an excellent seamstress, making her own attire for her competitions at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio. A leader and lifetime member of TOPS, she worked out at Nautilus until the age of 89. Her pride and joy in later life were rides in her little red car.

She was a member and communicant of Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Pittsfield. She was the wife of the late William E. Hitchcock and the late Wallace T. Malmgren.

She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Genzabella and Elizabeth Rood, both of Hinsdale, Mass., and Roberta Whittaker of Anderson, Ind.; two sons, Thomas Hitchcock of Jericho, Vt., and Wallace Malmgren of Henderson, Nev.; a sister, Ruth Fowler of Bradford, Vt.; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Eleanor is lovingly survived by daughters-in-law June Hitchcock and Robin Malmgren; sons-in-law John Genzabella and Stephen Whittaker; brother-in-law Robert Fowler; and sisters-in-law Sarah Stone and Janice Kinney; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is survived also by a special longtime friend, Wilma Batease. She was predeceased by a grandson, Timothy J. Roche, and brothers Donald and Guy Stone.

Funeral services for Eleanor G. Hitchcock Malmgren will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

Memorials in her memory may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St. Pittsfield, MA 01201.
