Eleanor Reed Howard
1926-2010 BENNINGTON Eleanor R. Howard, 84, Bennington native and longtime kindergarten teacher, passed away peacefully at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, Vt., Monday, April 12, 2010.
Born in Winchendon, Mass., on Feb. 27, 1926, daughter of Paul M. and Edna A. Cook Reed, she graduated from Bennington high school in 1943.
Eleanor attended Vermont Junior College and then Bennington College.
She worked at Sibley's Manufacturing, Noveck's Music store, The Home Furniture store and the Pennysaver Press. She became a school teacher in 1965, and taught kindergarten at several of the area schools. These included The Baptist Church, Molly Stark School, Beech School, Bennington Elementary and Catamount School, where she retired in 1993.
She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. After retirement, Eleanor moved to St. Johnsbury, where she resided with her daughter, Dawn, and family in 1994.
She leaves two children, daughter, Dawn A. Berard and husband, Steven F. Berard, of St Johnsbury; son, Joel R. Howard Sr. and wife, Cynthia I. Howard, of Newark, Vt.; six grandchildren, Jason, Dane, Joel Jr., Brooke, Trever and Lee Mikel; and 12 great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Visiting hours will be held at the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington on Saturday, Apr. 17, 2010 from 2-4 p.m. A prayer service will conclude the gathering beginning at 3:45 p.m. Burial will take place in Newark, Vt., on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. A grave side prayer will be lead by Chaplin Judy Kennedy.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Second Chance Animal Shelter in care of Mahar Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington , VT 05201, as Eleanor was an avid animal lover. Other contributions may be made to the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, Intensive Care Unit, in care of Sayle's funeral home in St Johnsbury, Vt.
