Eleanor L. Welch 1917 - 2008 SHAFTSBURY Eleanor L. Greene Welch, 91, a former resident of Holy Smoke Road, died Saturday Oct. 18, at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. She was born in Shaftsbury, Vt., March 20, 1917. She was the daughter of Arlie Edgar Greene and Bessie Beagle Greene. Eleanor received her early education at the Shaftsbury Elementary School and later attended North Bennington High School. She married James E. Welch April 19, 1963 in Cambridge, New York. Mr. Welch died Sept. 28, 1995. Eleanor had been employed at several area mills including the EZ Mill, BenMont Paper Company and the Union Carbide Corp. She had also been employed at an aircraft factory in Bridgeport, CT and at the time of her retirement she was employed as a supervisor at the Bennington Brush Company. She was a member of the VFW, Eagles, American Legion and Moose Auxiliaries all in Bennington. She was a Past President of the American Legion Post 13 Auxiliary where she was very involved and supportive for 27 years. She was twice Past President of the VFW Post 1332 Auxiliary. Eleanor loved her family and friends. She loved children animals and nature. She received much joy from her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She leaves three sons, Frederick Harvey, Donald Harvey, and his wife, Linda, and Phil Harvey and his wife, Eleanor, all of Shaftsbury. A daughter, Evelyn Harvey, of Shaftsbury. Nine grandchildren, Kevin L. Harvey "Aretino Barbarossa", Jodi Saumur, and her husband, Martin, Shannon Chapman, and her husband, Gerald "Buddy" all of Vermont, Michelle Harvey of Mass., Eric Harvey and Kimberly Thompson of New York. Laura Gillis, and her husband, Steve, Wendy McConnell ,and her husband, Tyler, and Terri Pate, and her husband, Jerry ,all of Alaska. Eighteen great-grandchildren. One great-great-granddaughter and a great-great-grandson. Nine brothers and sisters, Barbara Charron of Shaftsbury, Lina Armstrong of Shaftsbury, Arlie F. "Skip" Greene of Bennington, Lowell Greene of North Bennington, Betty Stratton of Bennington, Elmer "Dickie" Greene of Bennington, Gale Greene of Glastenbury, Clyde "Sonny" Young Jr. of Bennington and Howard Maxwell of North Carolina. Many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by a daughter Jean Lamira Harvey, a great grandson Ezekiel Miller, a daughter in law Glenna Harvey and five brothers Cecil, Donald, Raymond, Warren and Johnny Greene. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday October 23, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. David Smith, Pastor of the Shaftsbury Methodist Church officiating. The burial will take place in the family lot in Maple Hill Cemetery in Shaftsbury, Vermont. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday October 22, 2008 from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. If friends desire contributions in memory of Eleanor L.Welch may be made to One's Favorite Charity through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201 The following organizations are requested to meet at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home to conduct their services Wednesday evening. VFW Post 1332 Auxiliary 6:30 pm and the American Legion Post 13 Auxiliary 7:15 p.m. The family would especially like to thank the nurses and staff at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center, Wanda and Wayne King owners and operators of Fairwinds Residential Care Home; the staff at Centers for Living and Rehabilitation as well as the nursing staff and doctors of the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
