Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Eleanor Potter Gilroy, 91, passed away on Oct. 16, 2006.

She was born in Pennsylvania on March 27, 1915, the eldest of six children, all of whom preceded her in death. They were Harry G. Potter Jr., Louise Konyk, Gladys Nolle, Edward Potter and Kenneth Potter. Also predeceasing her was her husband of 32 years, Col. Robert J. Gilroy.

Eleanor lived a full and fruitful life. At 21, she began training as a nurse while working at the Canonsburg Hospital in Pennsylvania. She entered the Army Nursing Corps in 1942, serving throughout World War II in Australia and then in New Guinea, treating the injured. Eleanor served until 1947. At the end of her service, she remained in the Army Reserves. During this time, she completed her studies and obtained her bachelor of science degree.

In 1951 she re-enlisted in the Army. Eleanor was stationed in Japan for two years and later returned to the states as a procurement officer; recruiting young women from nursing schools and universities. While in the states, Eleanor was able to obtain her master’s degree. Eleanor later moved to Germany and worked at a hospital in Munich.

At the age of 47, she married Robert Gilroy. Their vows were exchanged in Athens, Greece, and then again in Germany, after which they honeymooned in Rome. She retired with a rank of major in 1965 and moved to Bennington, where she and her husband ran the Pleasant Valley Motel for 28 years. After losing her husband, Eleanor moved to Florida in 1996. She gave not only to her friends and family, but also to her country, which she loved so dearly. She will be greatly missed.

Eleanor is survived by her sisters-in-law, Fumiko Potter, Martha Potter and Grace Potter; a brother-in-law, Mike Konyk; nieces Gladys Topnick, Marilyn Hunter, Erika Pratt, Debra Georges, Michele Robertson and Peggy Raymond; nephews Harry Potter III, Norman Potter, Howard Potter, David Nolle, Edward Potter Jr., Mark Potter, David Potter and Scott Potter; also many great-nieces and great-nephews. She is also survived by her dear friend and helper in Florida, Prissana Hamman.

Services will be held on Nov. 3 at 1 pm at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a local animal shelter.
