Eleanore Palmer Obituary
Eleanore Roberts Palmer

1922 - 2015 BENNINGTON Elea-nore Roberts Palmer, a resident of Bradford Street for over 92 years, died peacefully on May 15. Born in Bennington on Aug. 22, 1922, Eleanore was the eldest daughter of the late Ivor Roberts and Margaret (Ahearn) Roberts. A 1940 graduate of Bennington High School, Eleanore later worked as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone Company. While Eleanore was working for Bell, her sister, Marguerite ("Midge"), was dating a man named Glenn Palmer. Midge and Glenn introduced Eleanore to Glenn's handsome brother, Vaughn, and soon two brothers had married two sisters. Vaughn was the love of Eleanore's life, and their wedding was held on October 12, 1943, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bennington. Eleanore and Vaughn honeymooned in Quebec, and it wasn't long before they were busy raising four children, Greg, Carolee, David, and Jeff. When her children were very young, Eleanore worked as a switchboard operator during the evenings at Putnam Memorial Hospital; she later dedicated her life to being a stay-at-home mother. Eleanore was always interested in the sports that Greg and David played. She helped with Carolee's Brownie and Girl Scout Troops, and loved hearing about the fun Jeff had at Camp Silver Towers. She enjoyed sewing and knitting, and was extremely proud of her family's Welsh heritage. Eleanore relished the cool weather, and liked relaxing on her front porch with a glass of Vaughn's iced tea, and spending summers at her family's camp on Woodford Lake. She was proud of her children and grandchildren and took great joy in their visits. Eleanore's survivors include her children, Gregory Palmer (Joyce), of Bennington, Carolee Gulley (James), of Bennington, David Palmer (Joanne), of Pownal, VT., and Jeffrey Palmer, of Bennington. She is also survived by seven grandchildren (Amy, Megan, Gwen, Jennifer, Jessica, James, and Jonathan); ten great-grandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren. Eleanore was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Vaughn; and by her sister, Midge Palmer, of Bow, N.H. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at River's Edge Community Care Home for their compassionate care they showed to Eleanore toward the end of her life. FUNERAL NOTICE: The Burial Office celebrating Eleanore's life will be held on May 19, at 11 a.m., at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bennington, Vt.; burial will follow at Park Lawn Cemetery. There are no calling hours scheduled. Gifts in Eleanore's memory may be made, through the office of MAHAR SON FUNERAL HOME (628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201), to Camp Silver Towers or the Special Olympics.
