Obituary Condolences

Elizabeth Calleo 1921 - 2009 BENNINGTON Elizabeth Calleo 87, passed away on Jan. 24, 2009, at Vermont Veteran's Home after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Born in Astoria, Queens, N.Y., daughter of Robert and Nicolina Salerno, Elizabeth was the youngest of eight children. She spent most of her adult life living in Astoria and worked as a legal secretary for a law firm there. Elizabeth was widowed at the age of 57, when her husband, Robert, died suddenly. They had been married for 32 years. Elizabeth moved to Dunedin, Fla., where she spent most of her retirement years. St. Paul's Methodist Church in Astoria and Union Street Methodist Church in Dunedin were central in her life and she sang in their choirs from her teens to her 70's. Elizabeth loved music and gave that gift to her children. She also enjoyed sewing and spent many enjoyable hours at her sewing machine. She enjoyed her retirement years in Florida to the fullest and had many friends there. She moved to Bennington in 2005 to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Charles Putney. While living with them, she was an active participant at Bennington Project Independence Adult Day Care. The wonderful care she received at BPI made it possible for her to remain with her daughter and son-in-law for three years. Besides her daughter, Elizabeth leaves a son, Roger Calleo of Patchogue, N.Y., and his partner, Susan Walker; two grandsons, Michael and Brian Calleo, and a sister, Eva Laurina, of Dunedin. FUNERAL NOTICE: Gifts in Elizabeth's memory may be made to the building fund of Bennington Project Independence through the office of the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201 or at 124 Pleasant St., Bennington, VT 05201. A service of remembrance will be held in Florida at the convenience of the family. Guest book condolences may be made at www. maharandsonfuneralhome.net
