Obituary Condolences

Elizabeth "Betty" Cech 1919 - 2012 MANCHESTER, VT Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Cech passed away peacefully at Equinox Terrace in Manchester VT on April 14 at 92 years of age. Betty was born May 25th, 1919, in Gladwin, MI to Frank Sheehan and Belle (Sutton) Sheehan. She was one of 14 children growing up on a dairy farm. After completing high school, she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps and was stationed in Munich, Germany. There she met and married William F. Cech, CMSGT with the Army Air Corps. After World War II, they returned to southern California and raised a family, three sons and a daughter. After retirement from the Army, the family relocated to Phoenix, AZ. Betty was actively involved with St. Vincent dePaul Catholic church and other volunteer activites such as assisting homebound parishioners and calling bingo at a local nursing home. She was fondly called "bingo Betty." While her two youngest children were still in high school, the family moved to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Betty became quite well known and respected with the locals, frequently joining shop owners for tea and being invited into their homes. Betty's warmth, curiosity and ability to make friends easily erased the standard barriers of "western women" interacting with Saudi families. Betty and husband, Bill retired in Arizona and were together there until 1989 when he passed away. Betty remained in Arizona until 2002 and then moved to Vermont to be near her family and granddaughter. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Bill, infant son, Daniel, and son, Douglas. Betty is survived by son Patrick, and wife Elaine of Kingston, PA; daughter, Catherine, and husband Dr. Rick Baum of Arlington VT, and son Stephen and wife Sheila of Irvine CA. She leaves grandchildren Bill, Maureen, Michael and Kyle Cech and Sarah Baum and one great granddaughter, Emily. She is also survived by a sister and brother. MEMORIAL NOTICE: There will be a memorial service next month in Arizona where she will be interred next to her husband Bill.
