POESTENKILL, NY -- Elizabeth “Betty” C. Griffith Falzo, 71, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003 at her home in Poestenkill. Betty was born April 11, 1932 in Danby, Vt. to the late John and Edith Thompson Griffith.

While attending Burr and Burton Seminary, Betty was captain of the basketball team in addition to playing soccer and softball. After graduating high school in 1950, Betty attended Castleton State College where she earned her teaching degree in 1954. Betty did substitute teaching until moving to the Capital District where she married Wallace R. Falzo in 1954. Over the next decade Betty and Wally welcomed their children Gary, Ed, Mary, Tom and Carolee into the world.

Wally worked as a mechanic and owned shops in Watervliet, Waterford, Pittstown and North Troy at different times. The couple lived in Troy, moving to Poestenkill after their home burned in 1970. Betty devoted herself to her children, attended their ballgames and kept close ties with her family in Vermont. Betty loved country music, especially Waylon Jennings and Patsy Cline.

Betty was involved in the churches she attended, First Presbyterian Church in Watervliet where she taught Sunday School and most recently Poestenkill Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). At Poestenkill Christian, Betty served as superintendent of the Sunday school, assistant organist, as board member at large and participated in the church’s Eden Park ministry.

When her children were older, she worked for 26 years as the counter clerk at Dunkin Donuts on Rt. 9 in Latham, working for many years on the midnight shift. After it closed, she worked for Dunkin’ Donuts in Wynantskill for 4 years.

Betty was the devoted wife of the late Wallace “Wally” R. Falzo who died Jan. 13, 2002. Loving mother of Gary (Jean) Falzo and Edward Falzo both of Pittstown, Mary Empie of Clifton Park, Thomas (Kim) Falzo of Latham and Carolee Falzo of Watervliet, Sister of John Griffith, Vollie “Tom” Griffith and Edward Griffith all of Danby, Vt. and Lester “Bud” Griffith of Dillon, Mont.; beloved grandmother, cherished great grandmother. Also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday at 10:15 a.m. from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 11 a.m. at the Poestenkill Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Pastor Michael White officiating. Interment is at Hillside Cemetery, Poestenkill. Friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8 p.m.
