STEPHENTOWN, N.Y. -- Elizabeth R. “Penny” Penrose Rowland Holmes, 83, of Route 43 died Friday, April 21, 2006, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vt.

Born in Troy, N.Y., on Oct. 24, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Sanford and Lucy O’Connor Penrose. She was a 1940 graduate of Waterford High School, a 1946 graduate of St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsfield, Mass., and a graduate of Russell Sage College, where she was awarded a bachelor of science degree in nursing in the late 1950s.

Penny was also certified as a school nurse-teacher and public health nurse through further studies at Russell Sage College. She also studied at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

For 27 1/2 years, she was a school nurse-teacher at Hoosick Falls Central School and St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls. She worked part time for eight years at St. Mary’s Academy and was office nurse for Dr. Philip Martinez and the Family Health Center in Hoosick Falls.

Until 2003, Penny was a longterm substitute school nurse for Mount Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown, Mass. She was a member of the New York State United Teachers, a representative from the Hoosick Falls Central Teachers Association to the Hoosick Falls Parent-Teacher Association and also received a lifetime membership from the Hoosick Falls PTA.

Penny was a member and secretary of the King’s Daughters Organization of the Hoosick Falls chapter for a number of years; a clerk of session for 20 years and an Ordained Elder of the First United Church, Presbyterian, of Hoosick Falls; a member of the Stephentown Federated Church and its choir; a member of the choir of the Community Congregational Church of Clinton Heights; a deacon and member of the choir for the White Oaks Congregational Church in Williamstown; and she also served as parish nurse for all three churches.

Penny was a board member for 14 years and president for eight years of the Commission on Economic Opportunity. She also enjoyed many different forms of music.

Survivors include a sister, Jean Penrose Banks of East Greenbush; dear friend and pastor, the Rev. Constance Ekback of Stephentown; a stepson, John Holmes of Oaklawn, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Virginia Holmes Brown of Middlebury, Vt.; a nephew, Stephen Banks of Massachusetts; nieces Linda VanScooter of Virginia, Licia Hazzard of New Hampshire and Patricia Hoenig of Florida; along with several step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two husbands, Ernest H. Rowland and Alton R. Holmes; a stepson, Randall Rowland; stepdaughters, Dorothy Olson and Mildred Hollinger; and a niece, Janice Banks Lavin.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the White Oaks Congregational Church, 480 White Oaks Road, in Williamstown, where the Rev. Ekback will officiate. Interment will be private in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waterford.

Calling hours will be at Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 Route 43, Stephentown, today from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the White Oaks Congregational Church’s Organ Fund in loving memory of Elizabeth R. “Penny” Holmes.
