Elizabeth S. Powers 1919-2008 MANCHESTER Elizabeth (Betty) Powers, a life long resident of Manchester died peacefully in her sleep after a long illness on March 22. Betty was born in Manchester, the eldest daughter of Walter and Esther Graves Shaw. She spent most of her life on Bonnet Street in Manchester where her family lived and maintained an insurance office and then lived next door in her own home. She attended local schools and graduated from Burr & Burton Seminary in 1937 and from Katherine Gibbs in N.Y.C. in 1938. She married her long time boyfriend Donald Powers on Dec. 31, 1938. They resided and raised their family in Manchester and in the fifties Betty started a long career with Factory Point Bank working in various positions for over 30 years. When she retired she was a Vice President of the bank and had the honor of being the first female at the bank to be awarded that title. In 1982 Betty and Don built their dream house in Fla. and for the next 18 years spent summers in Vt. and the rest of the year in Fla. where she played golf, bridge and tended her pansies and made many, many friends. Due to failing health they moved back to Manchester in 2001 and lived in their home on Highland Avenue. Following a bad fall she moved permanently to the Centers for Living in Bennington where she resided until her death. Her husband Donald died in 2003. She leaves her daughter Kathy and her son Mike and his wife Barbara and her grandson Craig, wife Donna and great grand daughters Alair and Josie of Manchester, and grandson Chris of Frisco, Colo. Also she leaves her sister and brother-in-law Kate and Jack Erwin, her brother Allen, and her brother and sister-in-law Doug and Joan Shaw, a special long time close friend Phyllis Binkley, and numerous nieces and nephews and their children and many cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service is planned at Zion Church at 11 on Saturday April 19th. Her family suggests that memorial gifts be sent to Zion Church, where she was a life time communicant and faithful member, at P.O. Box 717, Manchester Center, Vermont 05255.
