Elizabeth "Liz" Salem

1924 - 2013 BENNINGTON Elizabeth "Liz" Salem, 89, a longtime resident of East Main Street, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at Centers For Living and Rehabilitation.

The eldest daughter of George and Manera (Beshara) Salem, she was born in Bennington on Feb. 10, 1924. Growing up in Bennington, she received her education at Cora B. Whitney School, St. Francis de Sales Academy and graduated from Bennington High School in 1941. She continued her education graduating from St. Joseph's Business College in 1942.

Liz had worked in the family grocery store, Salem's Super Market until 1956, then, for many years as legal secretary at the former law firm of Clark, Lillie and Holden.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church.

Liz enjoyed reading and keeping up with world affairs; she had been a regular subscriber of The New York Times for many years. She enjoyed traveling, taking trips to the Middle East, Lebanon, Alaska, Hawaii, Europe and other destinations. Her favorite time was when she was with family and friends.

She leaves her brothers, Henry Salem and Charles G. Salem, both of Bennington, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her brother, George Salem, and by sister, Louise Lonergan.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A prayer service will be held Thursday, May 2, at 9:30 a.m. at the HANSON-WALBRIDGE & SHEA FUNERAL HOME. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. Burial will follow in the Salem family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial gifts may be made to Sisters of St. Joseph Retirement Fund, Sacred Heart School or Bennington Rescue Squad in care of the Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home, 213 West Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
