Obituary Condolences

SHUSHAN, N.Y. -- Elizabeth V. Bentley, 89, died peacefully on April 18, 2005 at the Hoosick Falls Health Center, where she had lived since March. She was the widow of Lewis H. Martell, who died in 1953, and Casper L. Bentley, who died in 1963.

Born Thursday, Dec. 9, 1915, in Westhampton, Mass., she was the daughter of Gilbert I. and Gertrude Moore Flint. After graduating from high school, she studied agriculture for two years at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. The family had a farm near Battenville from 1949 to 1971.

After selling the farm, Elizabeth moved to Shushan and worked as a self-employed housekeeper. She was an active member of the Shushan United Presbyterian Church, the Shushan Grange No. 1233, the Pomona Grange and the Shushan Covered Bridge Association, where she was curator for many years.

Elizabeth was always a farmer at heart. She liked antiques and enjoyed being a good neighbor.

A son, Charles D. Martell, and a sister, Arlene Buley, died before her. Survivors include four children and their spouses, Theresa Corcoran of Greenwich, Donna Langlois and her husband Daniel of Greenwich, Linda M. Peters and her husband Lloyd of Cambridge and Lewis I. Martell and his wife Susan of Eagle Bridge; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held at the Shushan United Presbyterian Church in early May. Elizabeth requested donations in her memory be made to either the Shushan UP Church, the Shushan Grange, or the Shushan Covered Bridge Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, Cambridge.
