Sister Ellen Therese Barry, SSJ

Sister Ellen Therese Barry, (Ellen Mary), 96, beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, in her 76th year in the Congregation, died in Mont Marie Health Care Center, Holyoke, MA on January 20, 2014. A native of Bellows Falls, VT, she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Loughlin) Barry.Sister Ellen Therese entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Vermont in 1938 from St. Charles Parish, Bellows Falls, VT. She became a Sister of St. Joseph of Springfield in 2001 when the two communities merged. She was graduated from Bellows Falls High School. She earned an A.B. degree from Regis College, Weston, MA. Sister taught in Christ the King School and St. Peter School, Rutland, VT and at St. Mary School, Fair Haven, VT. She was at Sacred Heart School, Bennington, VT for close to 30 years, serving as teacher and also as Principal. In her retirement she resided in Bennington, continuing her warm association with former students, colleagues and friends. In addition to her Sisters in community she is survived by her nephews David Barry of Florida and James Barry of Georgia and by her niece, Judith Bowen of East Dorset, VT. She also leaves her friend and caretaker of many years, Doris Maguire and her family of Bennington, VT. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be offered at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington at 11:00AM on Friday, January 24, 2014. Friends may call at the church from 9:00AM until the time of the mass. Interment will take place in the spring in Rutland, Vermont. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph's Retirement Fund through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, Vermont 05201.
