Obituary Condolences

SUNDERLAND -- Ellery R. Lawrence, 87, a lifelong resident of Sunderland, died Friday evening, Nov. 26, 2004, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

He was born in Sunderland on June 3, 1917, the son of Horace and Nellie (Judson) Lawrence. He attended local schools and served his country as a veteran of World War II. Mr. Lawrence worked at various trades throughout his life, including grocery and custodial employment.

Ellery married the former Amelia Young on Dec. 29, 1943. Mrs. Lawrence died July 5, 1988.

Mr. Lawrence was a member of the Harned-Fowler VFW Post 6471 and the American Legion, both of Manchester, and the Masons, Red Mountain Lodge, Arlington. He was an accomplished magician. He was a 50-year member of both the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians. Mr. Lawrence’s love for children was evident by dedicating more than 30 years as a foster parent for many children.

He was a devoted member of the East Arlington Federated Church, where he sang in the choir, and would purchase Christmas gifts and give them to many area children.

He is survived by his son, Richard Lawrence, and his wife, Kathryn, of Sunderland; his daughter, Maryanne Sanders, and her husband Bennie of Las Vegas, N.M.; three grandchildren, Cory, Nicholas and Erin Lawrence; two great-grandchildren; numerous foster children and grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Lawrence will be held Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 10 a.m. at the East Arlington Federated Church. At the request of the family, committal services will be private. There are no visiting hours.
