Ellis D. Winslow
1916 - 2009 BENNINGTON, VT Ellis D. "Ellie" Winslow, 93, a resident of Eastview Drive in Bennington, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at his residence, surrounded by his family following a brief illness.
He was born in Bennington on June 26, 1916, son of Edward and Annette Griffis Winslow. Mr. Winslow received his education in Bennington and was a 1934 graduate of Bennington High School.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Western Pacific and the Phillipines. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
He married the former Ann F. O'Toole at Sacred Heart Church on June 19, 1937. The ceremony was performed by Msgr J. Campeau. Mr. and Mrs. Winslow have been married for 73 years.
In earlier years Mr. Winslow was employed at Fillmore Farms. In 1939 he went to work as a District Agent for the Prudential Insurance Co. He retired in 1976 after 37 years of service.
Ellie enjoyed hunting and fishing. After his retirement in 1976, he and his wife spent their winters in Florida where they enjoyed playing golf with their many friends. They met many good friends from Canada and with them had many good trips throughout Canada. He will be sadly missed as a husband, grandfather and great grandfather. He was always there for his family and friends to help wherever he was needed.
He was a member of the Putnam Hose Fire Department where he had served as foreman and treasurer. He was appointed to the Selective Service Board where he served for several years.. He was also a member of the Board of Civil Authority and was Justice of the Peace. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 307, Bennington Lodge of Elks 567, Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church and the Bennington Club.
He leaves his wife, Ann Winslow of Bennington; two daughters, Joan Foster and her husband, James, of Bennington and Carol Harbour of Bennington; four grandchildren, David Trombley and his wife, Laura, of Victor, NY, Betsey Vattimo and her husband, John, of Retsof, NY, Jeffrey Harbour of Stevensville, Md., and Laurie Kobik and her husband, Todd, of North Bennington; eight great grandchildren, Grace and Olivia Trombley, Erin Vattimo, Jessica Vattimo and twin boys, Sean and Ryan Vattimo and Asa and Sam Kobik. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Nancy Jean Winslow; and by a sister, Marian Davis; and five brothers, Duane, Edward, Carleton, Bernard and Richard Winslow.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Friday Dec. 11, 2009, at 2 p.m. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday from noon until 2 p.m. The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery where military honors will be accorded to the Army World War II veteran.
