Elmer C. Harrington Jr. 1935-2011 BENNINGTON Mr. Elmer C. Harrington Jr., 75 a resident of Park Street, died Tuesday morning June 7, 2011 at his home following a long courageous battle with cancer. His loving family was at his side. Elmer was born in Bennington on June 29, 1935, son of Elmer C. and Marie L. Eggsware Harrington Sr. He grew up in Bennington where he attended local schools, he entered the Navy in 1955 and served until being honorably discharged in 1959. He had been stationed in Baltimore and Germany. In earlier years Elmer had worked at the former BenMont Paper Company, he then went to work at Putnam Memorial Hospital (now Southwestern Vermont Medical Center), for many years he had worked in patient care. Following an injury, he transferred to materials management, and he retired March 4, 2011 after 49 years at the hospital. Elmer had been a member of the Bennington Rescue Squad from 1977-1980, a Cub Scout leader for many years and was a licensed foster parent, having cared for many children with his wife, Joanne. He enjoyed puttering in his basement where he would re-finish furniture, many of them antiques, as well as repair and build all sorts of items. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling. He and his wife had taken all of their grandchildren to Disney World. Elmer loved gardening with his wife, completing word search puzzles and listening to country and western music. He leaves his wife, Joanne Palmateer Harrington, whom he married in Bennington on Oct. 26, 1974; sons, Mark Harrington of Woodford, Raymond Harrington of Bennington and Kevin S. Harrington of Kingsbury, N.Y.; daughters, Mary George of Richmond, Dawn Smith of Bennington, Melissa Scheffler of Bennington and Renee Harrington of Manchester; two grandchildren he raised, Amanda Harrington of Bennington and Rachel Harrington Tifft of Pownal; brothers, Jack Harrington of Bennington and Michael Harrington of California; sister, Eva Hess of Parrish, Fla.; 20 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a daughter, Michele Harrington Blount, who died July 25, 2000. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated on Mon., June 13 at 9 a.m. from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. A prayer service will precede the Mass at the HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME at 8:45. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the family lot in Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, N.Y. A reception will take place at the parish hall after the burial. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be present. The Vigil Service will be held during the calling hours.
