Obituary Condolences

Elsie May Domine 1917 - 2011 HOOSICK, N.Y. Elsie May (Philpott) Domine, 93, passed away at Bennington Health and Rehab on Sunday, June 26, 2011. She had resided at the Danforth Adult Home in Hoosick Falls for the past five years. Born on Dec. 6, 1917, Elsie was the daughter of W. Edward and Mary F. Brundige Philpott. She was raised on a farm on Pine Valley Road, Hoosick, and attended a one-room schoolhouse, to which she often walked or skied. In 1935, she graduated salutatorian from Walter A. Wood High School in Hoosick Falls, and at commencement recited, from memory, her five-page address. Following graduation, Elsie was employed by a family in Troy, where for 10 years, she had many responsibilities, including tending two grown boys. Spare time found her engaged in roller skating, dance lessons, attending matinees and shopping the stores in downtown Troy. Every other weekend she rode the bus "home" to visit family on the Hoosick farm. In 1943, while roller skating, she met her future husband, Francis, who was home on World War II leave. Following his December 1945 return from Europe they were married Sept. 24, 1947. Elsie was a longtime member of Hoosick Baptist Church, and belonged to the Crusaders and Ladies Aid. She also was a member of the women's fire auxiliary, as well as the Petersburg and Hoosick seniors, and was known for her daily "walk" along South Street in Hoosick. Always finding great pleasure in talking regularly with each of her four children, she was proud of their accomplishments. Elsie also enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading and receiving cards and letters. Her husband, Francis J. Domine, died in 1986. She leaves two sons, Robert J. Domine (Linda) of Monticello, Ga.; Richard K. Domine (Frances and two granddaughters) of Riverside, Calif.; two daughters, Ruth Marie Domine of Hauppauge, N. Y., and Rita Domine Reed (Robert) of Hoosick Falls. Elsie was predeceased by her sisters, Leila Shaw and Leona Goodermote.
