Elsie N. McWayne

1919 - 2009 MANCHESTER CENTER, VT Elsie Niles McWayne, 90, of Manchester Center, died peacefully Dec. 2, following recent illnesses.

She was born on Long Island, N.Y., Apr 17, 1919, and in 1939 began summering in Dorset with her parents and sister, Marjorie, at the Barrows House. In the middle '40S, her family became permanent Vermont residents, living in Pawlet, then Dorset. At that time Elsie and Marjorie started the Aunt Maria Cookie business. They sold homemade sugar cookies, local cheddar cheese, and maple syrup by mail order. It was one of the earliest direct marketers of Vermont specialty foods.

Elsie married David Henry McWayne in Dorset June 29, 1979. He died a short time later. Elsie moved to Equinox Terrace where she became a valued resident, welcoming others and helping them feel at home. She was always upbeat, and energetically involved.

She leaves three nephews, a niece, their children and 20 great-grandnieces and nephews.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held at Equinox Terrace Saturday, Dec. 12, at 3 p.m. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Dorset.
