Elsie L. Sprague

1916-2010 ARLINGTON, VT Elsie L. Sprague, 93, a resident of Route 313 West in Arlington, passed away peacefully March 11, 2010, at Crescent Manor Care Center in Bennington.

Born in Sandgate, Vt., on June 5, 1916, the daughter of Fred W. and Frances Schaffer Lomberg Sr., Elsie was educated at Sandgate School and graduated from Arlington Memorial High school. She worked with her parents on their farm in Sandgate, farming cows, sheep and turkeys and assisted in running the family boarding house in Sandgate.

Elsie married Harold J. Sprague of West Arlington, on Oct. 23, 1934. Mr. Sprague died on Apr. 15, 1982.

The Spragues moved into their newly built home in West Arlington after they married. Mrs. Sprague worked at the Battenkill Handle Company in West Arlington, making paint brush handles from 1936-1949. In 1950 she began working with her husband in his construction business helping build driveways and roads, bulldozing cellar holes and doing light trucking and selling top soil. She drove a dump truck, which was red with an air horn and white lettering and the name "ELSIE" on the cab, and was able to operate a Michigan Loader.

They retired from business in the 1970s. Elsie was a member of the Battenkill and Vermont State Granges. She served as a member and officer of the Degree Team. Elsie was also a member of the "Battenkill Dodgers", an all girls softball team and played on the team until she was 36 years old.

She was an avid fisherwoman and hunter. She enjoyed turkey, bird and deer hunting and shot a total of 78 deer (bucks only), bagging her first deer at age 13 and last deer at the age of 86. Elsie was an avid vegetable and flower gardener, winning prizes for her flowers.

She was a supporter and avid fan of the Arlington Memorial High School sports teams, loved watching hockey games, especially the Adirondack Red Wings, and an avid baseball fan, especially the Boston Red Sox.

Elsie leaves her sister, Hilda Thompson Wilcox of Manchester Center, Vt.; nephew, John F. Thompson and wife, Carol, of West Arlington, Vt.; niece, Freda L. Berry and husband, Nelson, of Carlisle, Pa.; niece, Alice L. Ashley and husband, Richard, of Sunderland, Vt.; nephew, George Thompson and wife, Zilpha, of West Charleston, Vt.; niece, Betty Townsend and husband, Vic, of Norton, Vt.; niece, Marilyn Scarlotta of Granville, N.Y.; niece, Elsie Matteson and husband, Joseph, of Beaver Creek, Ohio; niece, Rena Morrison of North Port, Fla.; niece, Patricia Morrison of North Port, Fla.; nephew, Harold Strope and wife, Miriam, of Delmar, N.Y.; special friends, Donna Masterson and Bailey of Ferrisberg, Vt., and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Fred W. Lomberg Jr., who died in March of 1986, and William G. Lomberg, who died Apr. 22, 2005.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: A celebration of the life of Elsie L. Sprague will be held at a time to be announced. There are no visiting hours. Interment will be held in the family lot in Sandgate Cemetery.
