Obituary Condolences

Elva C. Link 1913 - 2008 NORTH BENNINGTON Elva Catherine Bobst Link, a woman ahead of her time, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008. Born on Aug. 18, 1913, she was raised in Schenectady, N.Y., by her parents, Alfred E. and Mabel G. Bobst. In 1936, she graduated from Connecticut College for Women with a major in mathematics. That summer she married Gordon P. Link, who predeceased her in 1998. During the 1940's and 50's they lived in Galway, N.Y. Elva conformed to the norm of housewife and mother, caring for daughters, Ann, Peggy and Amy. In 1960, with children leaving the nest, she decided to attend SUNY Albany to earn a degree in library science. She worked first at the Schenectady Public Library and then at the Knoll's Research Laboratory Library. She diversified by accepting a position at the Burnt Hills High School and then the Arlington Central School District. At her retirement, she was head of the Hadley Luzerne Public Library. She was a volunteer at the North Bennington Library, a job which gave her great satisfaction. During the period of her employment, Elva began to explore the wider world. She hiked on the Long Trail in Vermont and in the Sierra Nevada Mountains with her sister, Sally, who survives her. Other adventures were to paddle down the Connecticut River the length of Vermont, and to take several camping trips across the United States. She also traveled to England. Gardening was one of Elva's passions. Her greenhouse was filled with exotic plants which she raised from seed. Her spring gardens in North Bennington were on a garden tour. She belonged to the American and Scottish Rock Garden Societies and attended regional activities. She maintained her plants into August. Elva's other passion was handwork. She did it all - knitting, crocheting, tatting, needle pointing, sewing, and braiding rugs. Her family values these projects which reflect her creativity. Elva and Gordon winterized the family camp and lived year round on Jenny Lake in the Adirondacks. When age and health became concerns, they moved to North Bennington. There, they were near Amy, her husband, Steve Breithaupt, and children, Eric (Jodi) and Kayla. She spent last winter in Florida with Peggy and her husband, Carl Peabody, and their children, Kathy (David Flanders) and Steve, and great-grandchildren, Dana and Kellen. Together, they enjoyed Elva's favorite snack of Oreos and milk. This summer, she visited Jenny Lake with Ann (Charles Moore) and their children, Susan (Steve Ekey) and Karen (Donn Boehler) and great-grandson Darren. FUNERAL NOTICE: There will be no service. A celebration of Elva's life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be sent to [email protected] The family has entrusted arrangements to the care of HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME, 213 West Main St., Bennington, VT 05201
