Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Emily Catherine McMaster, 93, a former resident of Grove Street, died on Sunday evening, Jan. 30, 2005, at the River’s Edge Community Care Home. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. McMaster was born in Rutland on June 30, 1911. She was the daughter of the late Samuel G. and Emily Hedwig (Freigang) Hayward. She grew up in Rutland where she attended local schools and had resided there until the mid 1980s when she and her husband Charles moved to Bennington. They were married in Rutland on June 15, 1932. Mr. McMaster died Sept. 3, 1989.

While living in Rutland, Mrs. McMaster was a member of the Congregational Church and a 50-year member of the Eastern Star. An avid bowler, she loved to compete in the Vermont Senior Games and had won many medals for her efforts. In addition she loved working in her flower gardens at home and her rock garden at the family camp in Pittsfield. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed spending time at the Bennington Free Library where she became a regular visitor. She loved life and people, she will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.

She leaves her two sons, George H. McMaster of Troy, N.Y. and Howard R. McMaster and his wife Mary Ann of Florida and Bridport; a daughter, Carol (McMaster) Chastain of Texas; her grandchildren, Michael Chastain, Charles McMaster, Robert McMaster and Nancy Hafford; three great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by two brothers, Frederick Hayward and Samuel G. Hayward Jr.; four sisters, Mrs. Earl (Doris) Ray, Mrs. James (Irma) Humphrey, Mrs. Jack (Helen) Schaper and Mrs. Umberto (Ruth) Trinci.

Private graveside services will take place in the Village Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
