Emily L. Dow

1937-2010 BENNINGTON Emily L. Dow, 72, a resident of Farley Drive in Bennington, died Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center surrounded by her family following a brief illness.

Born in Castleton, Sept. 19, 1937, daughter of Raymond and Angeline Lancour Dawson, Emily received her education in a one room school house in Chippenhook, Vt.

In earlier years Emily had been employed at the Polygraphic in North Bennington and later as a teacher's aid. She was a member of the American Legion Post 13 Auxiliary and a very active member of the Moose Family Center.

Her family was her world. She touched many lives and was loved and admired by everyone.

She enjoyed playing cards, going to Foxwoods, Bingo, fishing, camping and was a big New York Yankee fan.

She leaves her daughters, Bernice Bortell and Tim, Bobbi Jo Dow and Joe Predel, and Marie DeCoff and Andrew, all of Bennington; step-son, Gary Dow of Adams; grandchildren, Michael Greene of Bennington, Jason Greene of Kentucky, Carmen Bortell, Dana Bortell, Matthew Bortell, Joshua Moon, Angela Dow, Kaleigh Merrow, Mindy Surdam and Bertha Sergeant, Milo and Kate Surdam, Katrina Davis and Tim Webster, all of Bennington; great-grandchildren, Caelyn and Ceayra Greene, Emma and Alex Feliciano, Austin Bortell, Catalina White, Taelyn Baker, Jacob Moon and Mikka Surdam, all of Bennington. She also leaves two brothers, Eli Dawson of Bennington, and Robert Dawson and Jackie of Bennington; two sisters, Mary Graham of North Bennington, and Patricia Smith and Michael of Bennington; special friend, Theda Silvernail of Ellington, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Ralph Dow Jr., and a daughter, Nancy Dow Greene; her former husband, Ralph Vernon Dow, and her companion of 20 years, Ralph Quackenbush; as well as a brother, Raymond Dawson, and a sister, Josephine Dawson.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from THE MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at noon with Rev. James Preskenis, Pastor of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church, officiating. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. The burial will take place in the family lot in the Village Cemetery in Bennington. A reception will follow the service from 2-4 p.m. at the Moose Family Center in Bennington.
