SANDGATE -- Mrs. Emily Hughes, 80, a resident of Sandgate died Thursday morning, March 4, 2004 at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center where she had resided the past several years. Mrs. Hughes was born in New York City on Dec. 9,1923. She was the daughter of the late Jacob and Emily (Taylor) Lippert. She was a graduate of Newtown High School in Flushing, N.Y. She was married to James J. Hughes Sr. on Feb., 14,1943, they settled in Sayville, N.Y., where she had worked as a telephone operator and for a wholesale rose florist, Scheeberg and Sons. They retired to Sandgate in 1969, for 20 years she had managed “The Happy Cook” in East Arlington and became affectionately known as “the happy cook,” delighting patrons with her wonderful cooking and hospitality.

Her husband of 57 years predeceased her on Nov. 13, 2000.

She was very artistic and enjoyed sketching and knitting garments for her grandchildren. She was an avid reader throughout her life and also enjoyed working in her flower gardens. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She leaves her son and daughter-in-law James J. and Kathleen Hughes Jr. of Bayport, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet D. and Chuck Young of Arlington; a brother William Lippert of Florida; her grandchildren James Hughes, Erin Baker and her husband Todd, Peter, Yager, Tim Yager and his wife Shannon and Meghan Yager.

A service of celebration for James and Emily Hughes will be held on Sunday, March 28, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Federated Church of East Arlington with The Rev. Thomas Truscott interim pastor officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.

A time of fellowship and refreshment will be held in Bailey Hall immediately following the cemetery committal services.
