Eric "Rick"

J. Burgess

1950 - 2014 BENNINGTON Eric "Rick" J. Burgess, 63 beloved husband, father, papa, brother and uncle, passed peacefully in his sleep on September 2, 2014 at Albany Medical Center following a brief illness. His beloved family was by his side. Born on Oct. 5, 1950 to his mother, Annette Yott Burgess and father, Earl Burgess, Jr., Rick attended Saint Francis de Sales Academy, Bennington Catholic High School, and spent his senior year at MAUHS, graduating in 1968. It was at the age of 5 when Rick appeared in the St. Patrick's Day Minstrel singing, "I'm a Lonely Petunia in an Onion Patch", where his life-long love of music began. He performed annually in that show for many years. Rick also played a part in forming several bands throughout his life, from rock to his most recent devotion to singing the blues. He was devoted to his band, Blues Sanctuary, and was proud to play in venues throughout New England and New York. On Saturday, August 30, the band carried on without him, dedicating their performance to him at the local Garlic Fest. The band will be inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame in September. After high school, Rick worked at Bennington Health and Rehab, where he met the love of his life, Michelle Diane Shaw of Hoosick Falls. He was an extremely dedicated caregiver to the elderly, having had the blessing of being raised by his mom and grandparents, Joseph and Eliza McGurn Yott. He also worked at the Vermont Veterans Home and the Vermont Steak House for the Pinsonneault family. In the 90's, Rick took a job at Farrell Distributors of Rutland, and then went on to have a successful career as a mortgage broker with Northeastern Funding. Michele and Rick were married Nov. 1, 1975 at Sacred Heart Church by Father Joseph Quinn. Together they raised three children. Nothing pleased Rick more than spending time with his grandchildren, although a good game of golf was also high on his list. He was also an avid Red Sox Fan. He especially enjoyed watching and encouraging his grandson, Damon, from birth to the present, in playing sports. He rarely, if ever, missed a game. Rick is survived by his wife of nearly 39 years, Michele and his children, Justin and wife, Jackie of Medina, Ohio, Adrienne and Jarod, both of Bennington. He also leaves five grandsons, Damon, Carter, Cody, Jackson and Jake, as well as one granddaughter, Alana. Rick also leaves three sisters, Helen Morandi and husband John of Bennington, Mary Bradt and husband Jeffrey of Cohoes, N.Y. and Jo-Anne Prouty and husband George of Bennington; a beloved aunt, Helen Yott of Conn. as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday Sept. 5, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. If friends desire, contributions in memory of "Rick" may be made in care of Michele Burgess for a scholarship for his grandchildren through the office of the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
