Obituary Condolences

Erna W. Stehle

1913-2010 WILLIAMSTOWN Mrs. Erna Wilhemina Engelhardt Stehle, 96, of Sweetwood, 1611 Cold Spring Rd., Williamstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at Sweetbrook Care Center.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany on Apr. 12, 1913, daughter of Ernst and Margarete Becker Engelhardt, at age 17, she left the Frankfurt Opera Ballet and lived with an aunt and uncle in Akron, Ohio. Returning to Germany in 1934, she met her husband, Alfonse Stehle, on shipboard. They were married on June 15, 1935, in New York City after several visits to Frankfurt. They were happily married for 57 years.

Erna loved her adopted nation. Living in Washington, DC during World War II, she spent most of her married years in New York City. When Alfonse died in 1992, Erna moved to Sweetwood in Williamstown. She loved to entertain, even in her later years. She had a lovely voice and was always eager to sing at special events. Ever an optimist, Erna loved to tell stories and jokes. She would regale her friends at Sweetwood with witty tales, always remaining a bright presence wherever she went.

She leaves a son-in-law, Alan Wheelock, of Cambridge, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Wheelock Centola and her husband, Christopher, of Webster, N.Y., and Jared Horton Wheelock and his wife, Bridget, of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Garrick and Jordan Centola, and Dylan Jared Wheelock.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Pamela Stehle and Renate Stehle Wheelock.
